What to Wear to Play Pickleball
Share
If you're new to pickleball, you may be wondering what you're supposed to wear on the court.
Do you need special pickleball clothes? Should you wear performance apparel? Are there certain shoes you need? Will you look out of place if you show up in a regular t-shirt?
The good news is that pickleball is one of the most approachable sports you can play, and you don't need an expensive wardrobe to get started.
At Pickle & Main, we've spent years talking with pickleball players across the country, from brand-new beginners to experienced recreational players. One thing we've learned is that the best outfit for pickleball isn't necessarily the most expensive or technical. It's the outfit that helps you move comfortably, stay confident, and enjoy your time on the court.
What Do You Actually Need to Wear for Pickleball?
If you're playing pickleball for the very first time, keep it simple.
You don't need a closet full of specialized gear. You simply need clothing that allows you to move comfortably and safely.
For your first game, we recommend:
- Comfortable athletic shoes with good traction
- Shorts, leggings, skorts, or athletic pants that allow you to move freely
- A comfortable t-shirt, either short sleeve or long sleeve depending on the weather
- A water bottle to stay hydrated
- A paddle & a couple of pickleballs
That's really it.
Many new players assume they need to invest in expensive equipment and apparel before they can step on a court. In reality, most people start with what they already own and gradually upgrade as they play more often.
Comfort Matters More Than You Think
One of the biggest mistakes we see new players make is wearing clothing that feels restrictive or uncomfortable.
One of the reasons pickleball has become so popular is that it's accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. If you're brand new, you're probably not going to be sprinting all over the court or diving for shots like the pros you see on TV.
Most beginners play doubles, which means there's a lot of stopping and starting between points and shorter rallies while everyone learns the game. You'll still be moving, reaching, bending, and occasionally chasing down a ball, but comfort matters more than performance at this stage. The more comfortable you feel, the more confident you'll be, and the more fun you'll have learning the game.
If your clothing feels heavy, stiff, or restrictive, you'll notice it quickly.
More importantly, when you feel uncomfortable, you often play differently. You may move less aggressively, hesitate to reach for a shot, or simply feel distracted by what you're wearing.
Comfort and confidence go hand in hand on the pickleball court.
When you feel comfortable, you're more likely to move naturally, focus on the game, and have fun.
Should You Wear a Cotton T-Shirt or a Performance Shirt?
This is one of the most common questions we hear.
The honest answer is that both are great options.
Some players love performance apparel because it's lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking, and designed to move with your body. If you play regularly, especially outdoors or in warmer climates, performance shirts can help keep you cooler and more comfortable.
Other players prefer a quality cotton t-shirt or a cotton-poly blend. They like the familiar feel, the softness, and the relaxed comfort.
The best choice is the one that helps you feel comfortable and confident on the court.
Experienced pickleball players eventually discover what works best for them. The important thing is choosing a shirt that allows you to move comfortably and feel confident on the court.
Wear what feels best for you.
Why Experienced Players Almost Always Have a Hat or Visor
If you primarily play indoors, this may not seem important.
Outdoor players quickly learn otherwise.
A hat or visor can make a significant difference when you're trying to track a bright yellow pickleball against a sunny sky.
Without one, the sun can affect your visibility, making it harder to follow the ball and react quickly.
Headwear can also help you stay cooler and more comfortable during long outdoor sessions.
For many experienced players, a hat or visor becomes part of their standard court routine right alongside their paddle and water bottle.
Don't Forget About Eye Protection
One thing many new players don't consider is eye protection.
Pickleballs can travel surprisingly fast, especially during quick exchanges at the kitchen line.
That's why many experienced players choose to wear sunglasses outdoors or protective sport glasses indoors.
While protective eyewear isn't something every beginner needs to purchase immediately, it's worth considering as you continue playing and becoming more involved in the sport.
Your eyes are worth protecting.
Dressing for Indoor Pickleball
Indoor pickleball is generally the easiest environment to dress for.
Most indoor facilities are climate controlled, so you don't have to worry about:
- Wind
- Rain
- Intense sun
- Extreme heat
- Sudden temperature changes
For most indoor sessions, a comfortable t-shirt paired with shorts, leggings, or athletic bottoms is perfectly adequate.
When one of our team members took their first pickleball lesson indoors, they didn't work up a huge sweat, but they quickly realized how important comfortable clothing was. There was still plenty of movement involved, and being able to move freely made learning the game much more enjoyable.
Dressing for Outdoor Pickleball
Outdoor pickleball requires a little more planning.
Unlike indoor play, outdoor players need to prepare for changing conditions throughout the day.
Depending on the season, you may want to bring:
- A hat or visor
- Sunglasses
- A hoodie or sweatshirt
- A long sleeve shirt
- Extra water
- A change of layers
Conditions can change quickly, especially during spring and fall when mornings and evenings may be cool while midday temperatures become much warmer.
Experienced players know that having options is often the difference between enjoying a long session and heading home early.
Why Layers Are So Important
Layering is one of the simplest ways to stay comfortable on the court.
Many players arrive wearing a hoodie, sweatshirt, or light outer layer over a t-shirt or performance shirt.
As they warm up and start playing, they can remove layers as needed.
The reverse is also true.
After a long session, your body cools down quickly. If you're sweaty and temperatures start dropping, you can become surprisingly cold once you stop moving.
Having an extra layer available helps you stay comfortable before, during, and after play.
Long sleeve shirts can also be useful for cooler weather and additional sun coverage when playing outdoors.
The One Thing New Players Worry About Too Much
Many beginners worry about whether they'll fit in.
They're concerned that they'll show up wearing the wrong thing, look inexperienced, or stand out from everyone else.
The truth is that almost every pickleball player has felt that way at some point.
Everyone was new once.
Everyone had to learn where to stand, how to keep score, court etiquette, and the basic rules of the game.
Most pickleball communities are incredibly welcoming, especially beginner clinics, learn-to-play programs, and recreational open play sessions.
In fact, many lasting friendships have started on pickleball courts.
If you're nervous, look for beginner-friendly sessions in your area where you'll be surrounded by players who are learning alongside you.
The goal isn't to look like an experienced player on day one.
The goal is simply to show up.
Ready to Hit the Court?
If you're wondering what to wear playing pickleball, don't overthink it.
Start with comfortable shoes that provide good traction, clothing that allows you to move freely, and enough layers to match the conditions you'll be playing in.
As you spend more time on the court, you'll naturally discover your preferences. Maybe you'll fall in love with performance apparel. Maybe you'll stick with your favorite cotton tee. Either way is perfectly fine.
The best pickleball outfit is the one that helps you stay comfortable, confident, and focused on having fun.
Because at the end of the day, pickleball isn't about having the perfect outfit.
It's about getting on the court, enjoying the game, and being part of a community that loves to play.
